Southern California – Your Place For Jazz Education
If you live in Southern California and are looking for opportunities to learn or improve your jazz , you are in the right place. There are several reputable and accredited programs scattered throughout LA and Orange County. While there are many programs available, I have compiled a few together that stand out not only in their reputation, but also in their contributions to and collaboration with the surrounding community. Below is a list of these programs and a brief description of each.
California State University, Fullerton
The Jazz Studies Program at CSUF offers students a chance to prepare themselves for the world of professional performance and composing/arranging opportunities in the Southern California region and throughout the nation. Ensembles include the Jazz Ensembles, Jazz Small Groups (combos), and the Jazz Singers. From participation in these groups, students are prepared to take their place in the jazz and commercial performing opportunities available in the region.
California State University, Long Beach:
Since its inception, the California State University, Long Beach Music Department has enjoyed a tradition of excellence in the areas of Music Performance and Music Education. Approximately 100 full- and part-time faculty serve the 500 undergraduate and graduate students. Cal State Long Beach is also home to the well-respected and listener sponsored KJZZ (88.1). They provide Southern California listeners with the latest artists and titles as well as the great classics that every jazz fan enjoys.
Musicians Institute:
Musicians Institute offers a comprehensive, hands-on education in contemporary music performance, recording, guitar making, music business and film.
Los Angeles Jazz Institute:
The Los Angeles Jazz Institute, on the campus of Cal State University in Long Beach, houses and maintains one of the world’s largest Jazz archives. All eras and styles are represented, with special emphasis on the documentation and preservation of Jazz in Southern California. The Institute is a 501 c3 tax-exempt, public benefit corporation.
California State University, Northridge:
The CSU Northridge jazz program has a national reputation for excellence, drawing students from all over the country to this region. The Jazz Studies Program at CSU Northridge offers classes, ensembles and private instruction encompassing a wide range of musical genres including classical, jazz, world and commercial music.
Pasadena Jazz Institute:
The Pasadena Jazz Institute is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, comprised of music educators, musicians, and jazz music lovers, dedicated to promoting jazz education, preservation and participation.
LA Music Academy:
LA Music Academy is a small, intensive contemporary music education program. We were founded in 1996 by a number of prominent LA-based players who had also had significant experience providing practical, concentrated education to students over the last several decades at a variety of music education institutions.
California Institute of the Arts (CalArts):
The Jazz Studies Program is widely noted for its distinguished faculty, successful alumni and award-winning students. This challenging concentration helps students develop as performers, improvisers and composers through courses of study that integrate jazz with other musical traditions and the latest innovations in contemporary music.
