So, How Many Saxophonists Does It Take To Get People’s Attention? Taichung Jazz Festival goes after world record

Event:
Taichung Jazz Festival
Oct. 18th-26th
Taichung, Taiwan
JingGuo Parkway and Civilian Plaza

Located in west-central Taiwan and with a population of just over one million people, Taichung is the third largest city on the island, after Taipei and Kaohsiung. As they get ready to celebrate their 6th annual Taichung Jazz Festival, a nine day festival held from October 18th – 26th, they have their eyes set not only on the music. With the anticipated arrival of 1,000 saxophonists, the festival will attempt to break the current record of 900 saxophonists to play at once. (according to the Guinness Book of World Records).

While conventional wisdom might tell us that there is a point at which there can, in fact, be too many saxophonists in one place, the Taichung Jazz Festival is breaking new ground and seizing the opportunity to bring international fame to the city. We are often reminded of the great term “Saxophony,” which is defined as too many saxophones playing together (usually more than one).*

Currently, more than 500 saxophonists have signed up for this event and are preparing to do their part for the city. There are efforts to increase the publicity (locally, nationally, and internationally), although there are doubts whether this dream will be realized. There is now less than a week before the opening of the festival, and they certainly have their work cut out for them.

If you’re a saxophonist, and happen to be in the area, you might want to join in this effort – and if you’ve always wanted to play, but for some reason have been putting it off, now is your opportunity!

This comes a year after Beijing attempted that many saxophonists together to play a concert on the Great Wall of China back in 2007. They were obviously unsuccessful in achieving this goal; however their efforts and noted, and Taichung now sees their opportunity to beat them to it!
