Stanley Jordan and his trio will have the opportunity to visit Minneapolis’s Dakota Jazz Club October 27th and the 28th. Innovating jazz guitar with his techniques of tapping, he has really made a name for himself among guitarists. The rest of his trio consists of bassist Charnett Moffett and drummer Kenwood Dennard. In April, Jordan released his first major recording in over a decade, his Mack Avenue debut, State of Nature.
Jordan was born in Chicago in 1959, and at the age of 6 his family moved out to the Bay Area in California. He began playing piano at the age of 7, and inspired by Jimi Hendrix, he dove into guitar when he was 11 years old. While his classic tapping technique borrows from Hendrix’s style (among many others at the time), he was swayed toward jazz at an early age and has continued in this direction up to this day.
His experience in the scene has lead him to record several albums and perform with some of the greatest musicians, including Dizzy Gillespie. His debut album, Touch Sensitive, was released in 1982, under his own label “Tangent.” This sparked a lot of attention among people in the industry, and in 1985 he was signed to the newly resurrected Blue Note label, putting out another album entitled Magic Touch. This release would put him at the top of the jazz charts for nearly a year and lead to his nomination for a Grammy.
State of Nature was Jordan’s first mainstream release and included a great lineup of musicians playing with him, including Meta Weiss on cello, Charnett Moffett on bass, David Haynes or Kenwood Dennard on drums. While his band usually consists of a trio on tour, he likes to add the cello when he can, especially when covering some classical compositions and original works.
