One of the surviving champions of Dizzy Gillespie’s music, NEA Jazz Master James Moody is an accomplished musician on the tenor and alto saxophones, as well as the flute, despite being born partially deaf. In addition to his instrumental prowess, Moody is an engaging entertainer, captivating audiences with his personal charm and wit.

His gift for broken meters and chromatic passages led him to be dubbed “the Latin Monk” by timbalero Willie Bobo. Since the 1960s he has refreshed Latin dance music by introducing rock licks, urban poetry and elements of tango, cumbia, waltz and the folkloric musics of his beloved Puerto Rico.
