Jazz Masters Barry Harris & Von Freeman Join Forces In Chicago
NEA Jazz Master, Dr. Barry Harris will appear with Chicago’s own jazz master Von Freeman in a free concert on Friday, October 2nd, 2009 at 7:00 pm at La Follette Park (1333 N. Laramie Ave in Chicago) as part of theJazzCity free concert series.
Description
Having them both onstage represents an unparalleled opportunity to hear two virtuoso voices of jazz on the same stage, so don’t miss out. Barry Harris is part of an exceptional crew of Detroit-bred jazz musicians, including Tommy Flanagan and Donald Byrd, who rose through the extraordinary arts education program in the public school system during the 1930s and 1940s.
The iconic Chicago saxophonist Von Freeman, who turned 86 this year, created a unique and captivating tenor style in the 1940s and 50s but didn’t lead his first recording in 1972 at the age of 49. Joining them for the evening will be Stewart Miller on bass, and Charles Heath on drums.
JazzCity Concert Series
The JazzCity free concert series is a collaboration that we initiated with the Chicago Park District in 1997 that explores cultural connections in communities throughout Chicago. The simple premise of the JazzCity series is to connect people of all ethnicities and generations to the legacy (both musical and spiritual) of jazz in Chicago. Make it accessible by presenting it free of charge, and located right in the neighborhood.
For the musicians, it’s been a great opportunity for them to present and create new compositions. For the audiences, it’s been an opportunity to bring families and friends to see world class musicians in their own backyard. It has also been a unique venue for artists to create and present major projects.
JazzCity fosters greater awareness of the continuing legacy of Chicago’s vibrant jazz community and an unparalleled opportunity for musicians to reach audiences where they live.
