Happy Birthday Dizzy Gillespie! Alumni All Stars Performing through October 26th at the Blue Note

All Your Jazz sending out a remembrance of Dizzy Gillespie on what would have been his 92nd birthday. The Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All Stars are celebrating with a slew of shows at the Blue Note in New York. October 20th – 26th, 2009, the band will be performing as part of “Dizzy’s Birthday Celebration.”

The band includes James Moody (tenor sax & flute); Roy Hargrove (trumpet); Roberta Gambarini (vocals); Steve Davis (trombone); Cyrus Chestnut (piano); John Lee (bass); Lewis Nash (drums) – and tonight featuring Jimmy Heath (tenor saxophone).

What a great way to celebrate the life of one of jazz’s greatest musicians and contributors by sitting in on a performance of the great Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All Stars Band. Made up of some of the greatest jazz musicians in the scene today, this is one show to plan on attending.

Featured artist for tonight is tenor saxophonist Jimmy Heath, who has long been recognized as a brilliant instrumentalist and a magnificent composer and arranger. He has performed with nearly all the jazz greats of the last 50 years, from Howard McGhee, Dizzy Gillespie, and Miles Davis to Wynton Marsalis.
