Every few years, a new artist comes along with talent and potential so great that it challenges and redefines the common perception of what modern music is and where it’s heading. Esperanza Spalding is the new light on the horizon who weaves together the best of the old school with the progressive – all at just 24 years of age.

Last year, she released her second album, Esperanza (Heads Up) which was hailed by critics for its successful blending of Cuba and Brazil influences with classic soul and contemporary pop. Her first album, Junjo, was released in 2006. Recently, she performed at the White House on two occasions and appeared on NPR’s All Things Considered, The Late Show with David Letterman and Jimmy Kimmel Live.

She is now one of jazz’s most talked about artists, and will make her highly anticipated debut at the Orange County Performing Arts Center in Samueli Theater. As a vocalist, double bassist and composer, Spalding captivates audiences with her compelling vocals, unmatched instrumental ability and charismatic stage presence.

Her Center performances will have her thumping the bass and singing in English, Spanish and Portuguese, and scatting ethereal wordless melodies with daring improvisational flair. Esperanza will be accompanied by Otis Brown, drums; Leo Genovese, piano and Ricardo Vogt, guitar.
