Tucked behind a discreet Madison Avenue doorway, Bemelmans Bar draws socialites, politicians, movie stars and magnates to its witty and glamorous settings. The spirit of the bar’s namesake artists/satirist Ludwig Bemelmans, live through the mural he created for the space. Entitled “Central Park,” the whimsical mural features a cameo appearance by Madeline and her classmates, and is the only surviving Bemelmans commission on view to the public.

Located off the southern edge of New York’s fabled Harlem neighborhood, Smoke Jazz & Supper Club-Lounge presents world-renowned jazz musicians seven nights a week. Candlelit tables, plush velvet banquets, antique chandeliers, and an historic full-length bar create a real jazz vibe to go with the excellent acoustics and sightlines.

Smoke now serves the perfect complement to classic jazz—the innovative American Bistro cuisine of critically acclaimed executive chef / consultant Patricia Williams. Smoke was named “Best New Jazz Club” in 2000 by New York Magazine.

Smoke opened for business on April 9, 1999. Co-owners Paul Stache and Frank Christopher are carrying on a three-decade tradition of jazz at this location formerly known as Augie’s Jazz Bar.

When Augie’s closed in 1998, Paul and Frank pooled their resources to reopen the club but were unable to keep the name. Part of the Augie’s legend was that frequent patron and author Paul Auster based his Augie character in the screenplay for “Smoke” on the real life Augie. In tribute to his legacy, Paul and Frank renamed the club Smoke.

The room has seating for just over fifty, which ensures that every listener is close to the action. During Smoke’s renovation, the primary focus was on creating an unparalleled room for music…and it shows. The acoustics are some of the best anywhere. Pianist David Hazeltine remarked, “I love playing this room.

It’s rare that the piano can be heard as clearly as it is in this club.” Harold Mabern added, “It’s the best jazz club in the world.” In the decade since its opening, jazz has continued to thrive at 106th and Broadway and adding a few new chapters to that old Augie’s legend.

Smoke is now a restaurant, too, and is particularly proud of its association with renowned chef Patricia Williams. Patricia’s extraodinary culinary career includes stints at Sarabeth’s Kitchen, City Wine & Cigar Company, Berkeley Bar & Grill, Butterfield 81, and Morrels. Her passion for cooking with fresh, seasonal ingredients is clear from her menu for Smoke.

The original Birdland opened fifty nine years ago on Broadway, near 52nd street. At the time,Charlie Parker (a.k.a “Bird”) was the headliner, and the club was a hotbed of jazz in the 1930s and 40s. Many say that Charlie Parker was, in fact, the inspiration for the name in the first place.

Over the years, the club has had a few different locations, from Broadway uptown to midtown Manhattan. Despite the moving, it has always been referred to as the “jazz corner of the world,” highlighting some of the biggest names in jazz and staying true the all-American style of music.

History Of Birdland:

The club first opened its doors in December of 1949 and was host to many regulars (later to be named jazz legends), including Count Basie and his Smokin’ Big Band, John Coltrane and his quartet, Symphony Sid Torin along with Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, Bud Powell, Stan Getz, Lester Young, Erroll Garner, and many, many others. Due to the emergence of new popular styles of music like Rock & Roll, the club closed its doors in 1965.

Birdland came alive again in 1986, this time at 2745 Broadway, on the corner 105th Street. Due to triangular design, no musicians would deny the unique acoustics this setup produced. In ten years, more than 2,000 emerging artists performed at the club. On many occasions, artists who performed at the original club on 52nd street graced the stage of the second version of Birdland as well.

After a decade of neighborhood success on the Upper West Side, owner John Valenti decided to move the club back to Midtown. The new Birdland offers top-flight jazz in a world class setting, good sight lines and acoustics, elbow room, and a menu ripe with award winning Southern Cuisine.

No matter where the club moved, it was always at the center of actions, and it continues this way still today. Some of the great names to grace its presence include Oscar Peterson, Pat Metheny, Diana Krall, Roy Haynes, Michel Legrand, Pat Martino, Tony Williams, Hank Jones, Michel Petrucciani, John Pizzarelli, John Scofield, Phoebe Snow, Dave Holland, and Tito Puente, as well as the big bands of Chico O’Farrill, Toshiko Akiyoshi, and Maria Schneider.
