Biography: Bassist Matthew Garrison

Matthew Garrison was born June 2nd, 1970 in New York. Here he spent the first eight years of his life immersed in a community of musicians, dances, visual artists, and poets. After the death of his father Jimmy Garrison (John Coltrane’s bassist), his family relocated to Rome, Italy where he began to study piano and bass guitar.

In 1988 Garrison returened to the United States and lived with both Djohnette and bassits Dave Holland. In 1989 Matthew received a full scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston. Here he began his professional career with the likes of Gary Burton, Bob Moses, Betty Carter, Mike Gibbs, and Lyle Mays to mention a few.

Garrison moved to Brooklyn, New York in 1994 and ince then has performed, toured and recorded with artists such as Herbie Hancock, Joe Zawinul, Chaka Khan, Pino Daniele, Meshell Ndege Ocello, Joni Mitchell, Whitney Houston, Wayne Shorter, Jack Dejohnette, Steve Coleman, Rita Marcotulli, Bill Cosby, Paul Simon, Cassandra Wilson, Wallace Roney, Geri Allen, Gary Thomas, John Mclaughlin, The Gil Evans Orchestra, Tito Punte, Mike Gibbs, John Scofield, The Saturday Night Live Band, Michael Brecker, Mike Stern, Pat Metheny and many others.

In 1998 Garrison founded GarrisonJazz Productions through which he currently produces, promotes, and markets his music. The latest projects releasted in 2010 are “SHAPESHIFTER LIVE 2010 – PART 1 – MATT GARRISON SOLO” and the new website: http://musiccenter.garrisonjazz.com.

Jazz Great James Moody Passes Away At Age 85

James Moody – an American jazz saxophone and flute player best known for his hit “Moody’s Mood for Love,” an improvisation based on “I’m in the Mood for Love” – passed aways November 9th, 2010 due to complications from pancreatic cancer. The jazz great will be sadly missed.

On November 2nd, 2010, Moody’s wife announced on his behalf that he had pancreatic cancer, and had chosen not to have it treated aggressively. Moody died in San Diego, on December 9th, 2010.

A public service will be held on Saturday, December 18th. There will be a morning viewing at Greenwood Memorial Park, 4300 Imperial Avenue, San Diego, 92113 and graveside service at 12:30 PM. Then at 2 PM, there will be a celebration of Moody’s life at Faith Chapel, 9400 Campo Rd in Spring Valley, 91977,
officiated by Pastor Charlie Gregg.

Jazz Bassist Matthew Garrison Releases Latest CD “ShapeShifter Live 2010 – Solo, Part 1″

Matthew Garrison, the New York City-born son of John Coltrane bassist Jimmy Garrison, released his self-produced, self-titled solo debut in 2000. And while he has been in the studio working on compilations with other groups, it has been a while since he has put out another solo album – until last month. In November, 2010, Matthew Garrison released his latest album, Shapeshifter Live 2010 – Part 1, Matthew Garrison Solo, a stunning approach the role the bass plays in a jazz group.

In addition to the new release, Garrison has also recently unveiled his new and powerful one-of-a-kind interactive educational website. musiccenter.garrisonjazz.com was developed over a period of 5 years and has finallytaken shape as being one of the most comprehensive virtual music education centers available on line. All lessons can be tailor-made for each student by clicking a few buttons and he or she will learn many techniques and music theories through a series of detailed video lessons by Matt Garrison himself. Matt also offers one-on-one real-time lessons through the site.

Jazz Vocalist Nnenna Freelon Releases Album: “Homefree”

Concord Jazz announces the release of Homefree (April, 2010), the newest album from esteemed jazz vocalist and multi-Grammy nominee Nnenna Freelon. Homefree marks Freelon’s seventh Concord Jazz album as a leader and first studio outing since 2005. The 11-track collection was recorded at Sound Pure Studios in Durham, North Carolina.

The Album

Homefree is a soulful, swinging album that Freelon calls her “home brew.” The collection is comprised largely of contemporary interpretations of classic American Songbook tunes as well as a new original (the witty, playfully and poignant “Cell Phone Blues” composed by the singer) and spirited arrangements of two anthems (the gospel treasure “Lift Every Voice and Sing” and the national hymn “America the Beautiful”) that close the album.

Homefree opens with a brisk swing through “The Lamp is Low,” followed by the laid-back and easy-flowing arrangement of “ I Feel Pretty,” the Leonard Bernstein-Stephen Sondheim West Side Story classic that features Ray Codrington’s soulful flugelhorn lines. The latter has been in the band’s set-list for some five years, including a jazz show at the Kennedy Center for Miss America contestants and their escorts.

Other highlights include a soulful groove through “You and the Night and the Music,” arranged by drummer Kinah Ayah; a skipping, reggae-tinged rendition of Cole Porter’s “Get Out of Town,” that was arranged jointly by the band turning the standard upside down during a sound check; and, a new tune to the band’s set, the rarely covered Andre Previn-written beauty, “Theme from Valley of the Dolls.” Nnenna is currently touring in support of her new release.

Grammy-Nominated Trumpeter Christian Scott Release New Album: “Yesterday You Said Tomorrow”

On March 30, 2010 start trumpeter Christian Scott released Yesterday You Said Tomorrow, his highly anticipated, all-new 10-song collection. The album was recorded at the renowned Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey where legendary Rudy Van Gelder engineered the work. Yesterday You Said Tomorrow

The Album

Yesterday You Said Tomorrow references a saying that Scott’s grandfather would use to emphasize the importance of recognizing the work at hand and making the most of the available time to complete it Aided by guitarist Matthew Stevens, pianist Milton Fletcher, Jr., bassist Kristopher Keith Funn and drummer Jamire Williams, Scott address the issues head on, regardless of how uncomfortable the subject matter may be.

He opens the set with “K.K.P.D.,” a track full of dark harmonies and tense, competing polyrhythms. The title stands for “Ku Klux Police Department,” a reference to what Scott calls the “phenomenally dark and evil” attitude held by some of the local police toward African American citizens of New Orleans when he was growing up.

A more upbeat track, “The Eraser,” – penned by singer-songwriter Thom Yorke (co-founder and frontman of Radiohead) – resets the tone of the overall recording, say Scott:

“With that song, we’re erasing the issue that was raised in the previous song, and
then the album starts. Those first two songs are very much a part of the album,
but they’re there to establish an environment where you’re willing to listen to whatever
else we have to say, because you’ve been opened up to the validity of the original
argument.”

Artist Background

Since his Concord debut, Rewind That, Scott has received signifiant accolades. he was quickly tapped as one of the faces to wathch by Billboard, received a Grammy nomination for Rewind That and named one of Ebony’s “30 Young Leaders Under 30.” His style, sensibiliy and musical talent prove his appeal to both the hip-hop comunity and jazz purists, and he has performed with the like of Prince, Mos Def, DJ Muggs, Marcus Miller and Glen Ballard.

This past year Scott topped the Downbeat 2009 Critic’s Poll for Trumpeter of the Year, and he has appeared alongside George Clooney in the film Leatherheads as well as in the critically accliamed Jonathan Demme filme Rachel Getting Married starring Anne Hathaway.

Grammy-Award Winner Tom Hemby Releases Album: “In The Moment”

Grammy-award winner, guitaris, producer and songwriter Tom Hemby collaborated with some of the biggest names in the music industry for his third solo album, In The Moment (March, 2010). With a core rhythm section featuring drummer Vinnie Colaiuta and bassist Nathan East, the Nashville veteran has recorded 14 songs that spotlight his contemporary jazz sounds, instrumental prowess and signature arrangements.

In the Moment features a very special tribute to the international charity, Habitat for Humanity, titled “Can I Count On You.” Writee by Robbie Nevil, this recording features such luminaries as Vince Gill, Amy Grant, Bill Champlin, Christopher Cross, American Idol’s Mandisa and Melinda Doolittle. Concert Review: Sara Gazarek & Sachal Vasandani At OCPAC

This article is a concert review of Sara Gazarek & Sachal Vasandani, jazz vocalists performing at The Orange County Performing Arts Center September 24th-25th, 2010. Sara Garzarek and Sachal Vasandani are strikingly original artists who create jazz music that moves today’s generation. These two young singers have been championed by some of music’s most celebrated figures for producing music that is fresh and original while honoring the rich jazz tradition.

Artist Bios

Review

This was a great performance by both vocalists, filled with some of the greatest jazz vocals that Los Angeles has to offer. Performing both together as well as individually, Sara and Sachal really brought a variety of styles and influences to the show, offering a mix between The Great American Songbook as well as more contemporary, non-jazz songs.

It was clear from the beginning of the show that Sara has a voice for jazz, and she let that show as she performed songs from her last 2 albums Yours (2005) and Return To You (2008). And while it was great to hear that her music covers many different areas of jazz, the one thing that most impressive was her rendition of The Beatles’ “Blackbird”, really emphasizing that her influences spread out to many other styles of music.

Overall, she lights up the stage, involving the crowd, and just having a good time. This was very notable by the audience, as they couldn’t help but get into the mood as well. Even during instrumental solos, you could find her walking around the stage and dancing, almost as if to be having a silent dialog with the other band members. It made for a very relaxing and enjoyable atmosphere, and it was such a good feeling to be entertained by such a great vocalist and, at the same time, having it feel like a small and intimate jam session.

Sachal also did his share of engaging with the audience, looking to the audience for “call and response”. He is clearly very talented, displaying a great vocal range and excellent control. While his selections ranged from different styles and influences, most of his songs had at least one section that was slower or more quiet. As any performing musician knows (vocalist or instrumentalist), these instances can be the most difficult, as control must be harnessed and sustained over a period of time, often leaving one to be exposed. He didn’t wavier at all when it came to this, demonstrating great control and showing the confidence of a experienced jazz singer.

Interview With Jazz Vocalist Sara Gazarek

We recently had the opportunity to speak with Jazz vocalist Sara Gazarek. In the interview below, we asked her about how she became interested in jazz and how her experiences have helped shaped who she is as an artist.

Sara will be making her debut at the Orange County Performing Arts Center September 24th-25th, as OCPAC opens their 2010-2011 Jazz Series. She will be performing alongside another jazz vocalist, Sachal Vasandani, and the dynamic between the two will be something to look forward to

1. You had not been exposed to jazz too much until you were high school, and then you were awarded the first-ever “Ella Fitzgerald Charitable Foundation Outstanding Jazz Vocalist” Award. Was this something that was expected at the time, or did it more or less come out of the blue?

2. At the time you won the award, did you already know you were going to be studying jazz at USC, or did the award have a large influence on your decision?

3. To what degree was jazz an influence on your life in high school?

4. What other genres of music influenced you at that time, or still influence you today?

5. When you arrange music, do it allow to take form organically, or do you make an effort to consciously infuse a particular style or have it appeal to a particular audience?

6. What do you do to expose younger generations to jazz?

7. What advice do you have for younger generations that seem to have a more narrow and stereotypical view of jazz?

8. What is it about jazz that captivates you and keeps your attention, especially in comparison to other styles of music?
