The club became the first “burlesque” club in Austin during the 1960s with dancers like Candy Barr and Bubbles Cash. In the late 1970s, following the closing of the One-Knite on Red River, Roger and Roddy One-Knite went into partnershipt with local legends Summerdog and Wayne Nagel, leasing the club. They booked an incredible era of music, including Stevie Ray Vaughan, Joe Ely, and WC Clark among others.

In 1987 current owner Steven Wertheimer took over and totally retrofitted the club back to the way it was during the 1950s, with original murals and all. The club now features some of the best retro roots, rockabilly, country, and swing available anywhere. Annual events include Buck Owens, Wanda Jackson, Grey Ghost, The Blues Sepcialists, and Toni Price.

Dark and mysterious, the Elephant Room is an unpretentious jazz bar that has been an underground hit for years. The Texas Senate unanimously passed a resolution commending the Elephant Room of Austin, Texas for being named one of the top ten jazz venues in the United States as selected by world renowned jazz trumpeter Wynton Marsalis in USA Today. Marsalis is the artistic director of jazz at the Lincoln Center in New York.

In addition the Elephant Room also was named by Downbeat Magazine as being among the top 50 jazz venues in the nation. The Elephant Room is the only club in Texas that was named by either publication.

Early birds have the best luck snagging the sturdy-looking wooden tables, but there is always room to stand and revel in the sounds from local jazz favorites like Lara & Reyes, as well as up-and-coming acts. The bar is 21 and over, so leave the young ones at home!

Reviewers give it exceptional marks, commenting:

“The Elephant room is legendary as far as Austin goes. They have
had some great music come in and out of that place downstair for years.
To drown yourself in a stiff martini, listen to someone blowing on a tenor
sax and lose yourself in the improvisation is a true experience. Elephant
Room….wish I was there.”

“I love this place! Great place to go for a relaxed night out with good music.
There are waitresses so you don’t need to constantly get up and go wait in
line up the bar like other bars. Very chill good to go with a group or a date.”

Full bar, over 20 different drafts, & wine by the glass
