Celebrating the release of their new jazzed media CD Where the Warm Winds Blow, they are excited to share their new stuff with New York. The album, released May 12th of this year through Jazzed Media Label, marks Mel Martin’s first new studio recording since 2001. It features a cohesive ensemble and encompasses a wide panoply of styles including Latin jazz originals, contemporary classical, and jazz standards from Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, and Victor Young.

Where the Warm Winds Blow

Artist Background:

Mel Martin is a composer, arranger, bandleader, saxophonist and flute player – one of the most versatile and creative musicians to ever emerge from the San Francisco Bay Area. In his long career, he’s played a part in many of the innovative movements that have come out of that creative community.

He sat in with Wes Montgomery and his brothers while he was still a teenager, played in John Handy’s Freedom Band in 1962 upon moving to San Francisco, worked and recorded with many of the progressive rock and Latin rock bands of the late 60s and early 70s including The Loading Zone, Cold Blood, Santana, Azteca and Boz Scaggs.

He founded the award winning Listen, one of the early West Coast jazz-fusion bands in 1976. He’s currently artistic director of Bebop and Beyond, a group he founded in 1983, as well as leading the Mel Martin Band, The Tenor Conclave, the Mel Martin Big Band and the Benny Carter All Star Tribute Band.

Chambers will be jointed on this engagement by one of the most versatile percussionist on the scene today, Steve Berrios, capable of handling both jazz and latin idioms; veteran Vincent Harding who has performed with Cedar Walton, Nat Adderly, the Three Altos, Gil Evans Orchestra and many more; piano stylist George Cables, and bassist Essiet Essiet.

The program for this engagement promises to be as varied as his latest CD, The Outlaw, with re-harmonized standards and jazz chestnuts; samba, Afro-Cuban grooves and straight ahead jazz.

Artist Background:

Joe Chambers ranks as one of the most notable drummers and percussionist of his generation, and staple of the venerable (and once independent) Blue Note Label. As a member of the 60’s fraternity that recorded some of Blue Notes finest music, he can lay claim to a place alongside such innovative artist as the late Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, McCoy Tyner, Bobby Hutcherson, and Herbie Hancock. His intense drumming graced many landmark albums including: Hubbard’s Breaking Point; Shorter’s Schizophrenia, The All Seeing Eye, Adam’s Apple, and Et Cetera; Tyner’s Tender Moments, and Chick Corea’s Tones for Joan’s Bones.

The eclectic approach is telling on his latest release, The Outlaw (Savant Label) in which he presents original material and new arrangements of a handful of covers; including Ellington’s “In a Sentimental Mood” played on vibraphone and Horace Silver’s “Outlaw” played on marimba.

Brazilian native pianist/singer/composer Eliane Elias brings her Trio to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola for five nights. Featuring Eliane Elias, piano/vocals; Marc Johnson, bass; Rafael Barata, drums. Elias is known for her distinctive and immediately recognizable musical style which blends her Brazilian roots, her sensuous, alluring voice with her impressive instrumental jazz, classical and compositional skills.

Eliane’s new album Bossa Nova Stories was released this past summer in Japan and Europe. It debuted at #1 on the French Charts and remained #1 for three consecutive weeks. It was also the #1 Best Selling Jazz Vocal Album in Japan, May-June 2008 (Swing Journal). The CD is a celebration to the 50th Anniversary of the Bossa Nova and features her vocals accompanied by a stellar rhythm section and strings recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London.

As a guest artist she has appeared on performances and recordings with Joe Henderson, James Taylor, Michael Franks, Mingus Dynasty, Andy Summers, the Grammy winning Brecker Bros’ Out of the Loop, Earl Klugh, Toots Thielemans’ The Brasil Project, Ivan Lins, Denyce Graves, Steps Ahead, Calle 54, and Marc Johnson’s Shades of Jade on ECM Records, an instrumental recording she co-produced and contributed many of her own original compositions. Shades of Jade received the Danish Music Award as Best Foreign Release in March 2006.

Ms.Elias was featured in the Thelonious Monk Institute’s televised Second Annual “Celebration of America’s Music” at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl, the Carnegie Hall Jazz Orchestra, four times on Marion McPartland’s NPR “Piano Jazz”; the JVC Festival with Sting, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, and Caetano Veloso at Lincoln Center in New York, the televised Piano Grand, a Gala celebration for the 300th Anniversary of the piano in Washington DC. hosted by Billy Joel, and the BBC Jazz Orchestra to name a few.
