Artists: The James Moody and Hank Jones Quartet
Title: Our Delight
Genre: Jazz
Label: Mighty Quinn Productions
Release: Oct, 2008

With a mere 140 years of performing experience between them, James Moody and Hank Jones finally decided to sit down and bounce some ideas off each other and Our Delight was born.

The quartet along with Moody (tenor sax and flute) and Jones (piano) is Todd Colman (bass) and Adam Nussbaum (drums). This quartet turns out some gorgeous compositions, 12 in total, and each one has their own distinct personality thanks to the consistency and all around excellence of every musician involved.

The band covers Gillespie to Stitt and beyond. The only original on the album is “Darben The Red Foxx,” an interesting and thought provoking title with the inference to deceased comedian Red Foxx.

<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001H4NG7M?ie=UTF8&tag=alyoja-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B001H4NG7M"target="new">

Primarily this album holds back on the jumpin’ swing until it reaches “Eternal Struggle” and picks it up again on “Woody ‘N” You.” The boys let their proverbial hair down as they see fit and how it pertains to each selection, not willing to push any boundaries and experiment as such. Even so, this is beautiful music and these immaculate artists interpret all of it beautifully.

Prior to the upbeat and engaging numbers, what you get is some soothing and eloquent tracks that let you melt into your chair. Not to say they do not have any big band swing, they do but with a softer touch that does not bring you up too high, it just decides to let you down easy every time when there is a change of pace that is noticeable.

At any pace, Our Delight is your delight if you are a true jazz fan and appreciate what the older gentleman of the genre can accomplish when they join forces. Any angle you look at this CD it is a clear-cut winner and definitive jazz.

Think of a band or a song that you really like (and no, it doesn’t have to be jazz). Now imagine what a lounge version of that song would be. Well, that – in a nutshell – is Richard Cheese. He broke out with his first album Lounge Against The Machine back in 2000, and he has taken music parody and arranging by storm.

Thinking about how to do a lounge version of “Baby Got Back” by Sir Mix-A-Lot, “Rock the Casbah” by The Clash – or even “Gin & Juice” by Snoop Dog and “Fight For Your Right” by the Beastie Boys. Yeah, this guy is entertaining and hilarious!

Who Is Richard Cheese?

But behind all the fun and games is his band “Lounge Against The Machine,” – featuring Mr. Cheese on vocals – and they know their stuff, having built a foundation of solid music skills. Combine that with their creativity for adapting arrangements of songs from just about any style, and you’re left with album after album of good music and great comedy relief.

Since his first album in 2000, he has put out 7 other albums, not to mention a couple of singles. His releases this year include “Dick At Nite,” a karaoke instrumental version of his 2007 release, and his single “Indiana Jones Theme.” The band also has 3 more albums in the works, one of which (Viva La Vodka) is expected by the end of 2008. Two others are scheduled for 2009 and 2010 releases.

Unfortunately, Cheese has released that he is wrapping up his lounge band in 2009, and plans to go out with a 2008-2009 farewell tour, already underway. He does mention, however, that he will be back in 2010 with an all-new Hawaiian band lineup. Maybe not the same, but at least we can continue to hear his arrangements.

If you follow jazz bassist, you have probably heard of Terrence Richburg.

A well-known musician, producer, arranger and songwriter, Richburg is taking his love of the gospel jazz genre and turning it into a new e-zine and website. The name of his e-zine is The Jazz Gospel Central and can be found at <a href="http://www.jazzgospelcentral.com"target="new">http://www.jazzgospelcentral.com

The first edition of the Jazz Gospel Central e-zine debuted on October 1, 2008, with the aim to reach out to the thousands of jazz, gospel and Christian jazz music lovers and musicians. The head of RichEscape Music, home of praise and worship leader Terrell Hunt, Richburg aims to give the often overlooked genre some well-deserved attention.

What is Gospel Jazz?

Well, as the name suggests, it aims at finding the best of both genres (Gospel & Jazz) and combining them into a truly unique approach toward music. With increasing popularity and acceptance within the Christian community, and some within the secular world of musical entertainment, Richburg believes that commercial acceptance and equality in the market place is still missing.

Always hopeful and optimistic, Richburg replies:
“Gospel Jazz brings together two of the most precious of these artistic riches implanted within the fertile hearts and minds of many gifted artists and musicians, several of which are awaiting the opportunity when they and their music will be discovered and presented to the world.”

Featured Artist: Yosvany Terry Afro-Cuban Jazz Quartet
Dates: August 13th-16th
Location: Jazz Bakey – Culver City, CA

Grammy award winning saxophonist, chekeré player and composer Yosvany Terry fueses the traditional sounds of his native Cuba, with fiery post-bop, sophisticated harmonies, and avant-garde innovation. His quartet features Yosvany Terry on, saxophone and chekeré, Osmany Paredes on piano, Yunior Terry on bass, and Ernesto Simpson on drums. They perform at the Jazz Bakery in Culver City August 13-16.

Yosvany Terry received his earliest musical training from his father, Eladio “Don Pancho” Terry , violinist and Cuba’s leading player of the . His father was also known as the founder and director of the “Orquesta Maravillas de Florida,” one of Cuba’s most important charanga bands. Mr. Terry went on to receive his classical music training and graduated from both the prestigious National School of Art (ENA) and Amadeo Roldan Conservatory.

While in Cuba, Yosvany was known for his musical innovation performing with the likes of legends, such as Chucho Valdez, Silvio Rogriguez, Fito Paez, and Cubanismo, as well as forming the influential group, Columna B. Their work represented the new voice of young Cuban jazz players. ” Columna B became this limitless work-shop, where everything could be tried and experimented with. We learned how to polish and develop our craft in a very special and intuitive sense “, comments Terry. Columna toured throughout the US and Europe, and in 1998 premiered their Inroads Commissioned-piece by Arts International (through the Ford Foundation) at Stanford Jazz Festival.

Yosvany came to New York in 1999 and was immediately recognized as a “spectacular talent” in the Jazz scene, playing with Roy Hargrove, Steve Coleman, Eddie Palmieri, Dave Douglass, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez, and bassist Avishai Cohen.

Always a student, Mr. Terry has absorbed and incorporated American jazz traditions with his own Afro-Cuban roots to produce compositions and solo work that flow from the rhythmic and hard driving avant-garde to sweet sounding lyricism. His voice and style are unique and complex, and with his new Quintet he has married Cuban and American musical traditions to create a new and exciting sound.

Born in Santa Clara Cuba, Osamany Paredes started playing piano at the age 8. He graduated in 1991 from the prestigious Escuela Nacional de Música de La Habana and moved to Mexico in 1992, where he became well known as a jazz musician and is now the latest heavyweight to hang his hat here in the United States. His style is Traditional with a very modern edge. It is Afro-Cuban jazz for the new millennium. Paredes is an aggressive stylist with a bright-sounding, percussive approach and penchant for fiery improvisations, yet time and again he reveals a sweet side on the likes of the stately contradanza and boleros. Having studied classically in Cuba, then working in Mexico City and other spots with such powerhouses as Israel Cachao Lopez, Patato Valdes and Dafnis Prieto.

The effect of jazz upon American culture and the American character has been all-pervasive. This superlative history is the first and the most renowned systematic outline of the evolution of this unique American musical phenomenon. Stearns begins with the joining of the African Negro’s musical heritage with European forms and the birth of jazz in New Orleans then follows its course through the era of swing and bop to the beginnings of rock in the 50s, vividly depicting the great innovators, and covering such technical elements as the music’s form and structure.

    -Larry Kart (2004)

Kart is a genuine critic. He analyzes how a particular player sounds more closely than, it certainly seems, any other jazz writer who, like him, doesn’t use musical notation to illustrate the discussion. In a piece on avant-garde saxophonist Roscoe Mitchell, a listener-demanding musician, Kart describes the first 3 minutes of a 23-minute performance so concretely that one could easily check out his accuracy by listening to the same recording. By no means always so thoroughgoing, he still reliably gives readers enough solid information to aurally check up on him, and then to argue with as well as learn from his evaluations. Kart is also historically and sociologically well informed about jazz, enabling him to make cogent assessments of received opinion on historic performers such as Louis Armstrong; to ask informants the right questions or give them room to say arresting things (see the Frank Zappa interview); and to cogently critique whole movements (e.g., jazz revivalism in "The Neo-Con Game"). -F. Scott Fitzgerald (2007)

Commemorating the 100th anniversary of his birth, these essays present a middle-aged Fitzgerald looking back on the era he came to epitomize. This book of five confessional essays from the 1930s follows Fitzgerald and his wife Zelda from the height of their celebrity as the darlings of the 1920s to years of rapid decline leading to the self-proclaimed "Crack Up" in 1936. The poetics of Fitzgerald’s style are not lost in nonfiction, and these pieces display some of his finest writing. This publication from Boomer Books is specially designed and typeset for comfortable reading.

A jazz writer for three decades, W. Royal Stokes has a special talent for capturing the initial spark that launches a musician’s career. In Growing Up With Jazz, he has interviewed twenty-four instrumentalists and singers who talk candidly about the early influences that started them on the road to jazz and where that road has taken them. From Art Blakey to Claire Daly to Don Byron, here are the compelling stories of two dozen top musicians finding their way in the world of jazz.

      -Biographiq (2008)

Duke Ellington – American Jazz Man is the biography of Duke Ellington, an American composer, pianist and band leader who was one of the most influential figures in jazz, if not in all American music. As a composer and a band leader, Ellington’s reputation has increased since his death, with thematic repackagings of his signature music often becoming best-sellers. Ellington called his style and sound "American Music" rather than jazz. One of the twentieth century’s best-known African-American celebrities, Ellington recorded for many American record companies, and appeared in numerous films. Duke Ellington – American Jazz Man is highly recommended for those interested in reading more about this admired music legend.

Pianist George Kahn returns to the Catalina Bar & Grill with his quintet. The evening celebrates the release of George’s 6th CD, Cover Up. The CD, produced by Brian Bromberg, is a collection of notable contemporary music that George has created jazz arrangements for, along with original compositions.

Some of the selections include Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb,” John Mayer’s “Waiting For The World To Change,” and a rendition of Bill Withers’ “Use Me” with Courtney Lemmon on vocals. The album features Larry Steen on Bass, Harry Kim on Trumpet, Clayton Cameron on drums and Andy Suzuki on Sax.

Catalina’s is located at 6725 Sunset Blvd in Hollywood; the show starts at 8pm.

Biography:

When a young musician’s sources of inspiration are jazz greats like Dave Brubeck, Ramsey Lewis, Joe Sample, Vince Guaraldi and Wynton Kelly, you’d figure that his own music would turn out to be pretty special…and in the case of jazz pianist and composer George Kahn, you’d be right. His music captures the feel of the West Coast Jazz scene of the 50’s & 60’s, but with a contemporary edge. George has incorporated many styles including bebop, smooth jazz, blues, Latin and New Orleans rhythms.

Having majored in Music Composition at Brandeis University, George brings a classically trained sensibility to the jazz form. In his music today, George creates a musical environment where there is room for experimentation and spontaneity. His music, unlike a lot of jazz, is not
about how fast or complicated the music is — it’s a forum where he can communicate feelings and emotions with his audience. George’s musical mission is to recapture the magic of jazz from the earlier periods “before synthesizers and sequencers roamed the earth”.

In 1999, George formed Sudhana Music Publishing and his independent record label, Playing Records, as an avenue to share his music. He has released five self-produced CDs: Conscious Dreams (a jazz/new age configuration), Out of Time (a jazz recording featuring the late Billy Higgins on drums), Freedom Vessel (featuring Dave Carpenter on bass and Joe Labarbera on drums), and Midnight Brew (featuring Grammy-nominated trumpeter Bobby Rodriguez, Peak recording artist Eric Marienthal, and Telarc recording artist Tierney Sutton). His latest album “…Compared To What?” was released in October 200 4, and once again features Eric, as well as woodwind guru Justo A lmario , drumme r and percussionist Alex Acuña, bassist extraordinaire Bri an Bromberg, and trumpet player John Fumo. The album is already get ting radio play o n b oth jazz radio stations and various internet radio broadcasts, suc h as RADI OIO.COM.

“…Compared To What?” has received airplay on over 150 jazz radio st ations across the country, and reached #39 on the JazzWeek radio charts as 2005 began. It was c hosen ONE OF THE TOP 5 JAZZ ALBUMS OF 2004 by RADIOIO.COM, and has b een in medium to heavy rotation on many stations including KKJZ in Long Beach.

Inspired by the Internet to mass market and distribute hi s music through alternative channels, George has truly connected with the o nline music audie nce. On MP3.com, mp3.com/georgekahn reported over 275,000 listens and do wnloads. With the demise of MP3.com in 2003, George started his own we bsite www.georgekahn.com, garnering OVER 600 hits per day by December of 2004. Her e people can check out the music and information, and have a forum to interact with George.

Los Angeles Jazz Meccas like The Baked Potato, Lu naria, T he Jazz B akery, and Catalina Bar and Grill are among the clubs where the l ocals com e to hear G eorge Kahn’s jazz stylings. Recent gigs included a performance at the TASTE OF BRENTWOOD FESTIVAL in 2004, and the PLAYBOY JAZZ FESTIVA L as pa rt of THE PASADENA SUMMERFEST in May 2002.

With the subtlety of Dave Br ubeck and the positive drive of Vince Guaraldi, George Kahn’s pia no mus ic is an independent jazz pleasure. Join George and his band (A lex Acuñ a, Brian Bromberg, Justo Almario, Eric Marienthal, and John Fumo) as t hey ad d to the evolution of Jazz with his 5th release,
“…Compared To Wh at?” “There is a constant that runs through his music: It’s always hip.” Alfredo Cruz, Jazz Broadcaster.
