Guitarist Jim Hall To Play Birdland, Nov. 10th-14th

Jazz guitarist Jim Hall will be stopping by Birdland Jazz Club November 10th-14th, 2009. Playing alongside him are Greg Osby, Scott Colley, & Joey Baron, to round out the quartet. Sets are at 8:30 pm & 11:00 pm each night, and tickets run between $30 – $40.

He is also promoting his latest release Hemispheres, which originally started as a duo with Bill Frisell and developed into a quartet. The album pays homage to standards and new creations, some improvised on the spot. All the pieces are mystical, swinging, and cover all hemispheres of mind, brain, and world.

Artist Info

Guitar great Jim Hall has been a major player in the jazz world since the 1950s. He’s worked with everybody from Sonny Rollins to Bill Evans, and has performed everywhere from the Village Vanguard to the White House.

Along with being a favorite guitarist among fellow musicians and jazz fans, he has gained international recognition and praise among critics for his work as a composer and arranger. Jim has received honors such as the New York Jazz Critics Circle Award for Best Jazz Composer/Arranger in 1997, and a 2004 NEA Jazz Masters Fellowship Award.

In addition to his recent focus on orchestral and choral composition, Jim remains an active player and leader, working and recording with a variety of ensembles and his regular trio with a long list of special guests such as Joe Lovano, Greg Osby, the New York Voices, Kenny Barron, Pat Metheny, Slide Hampton, and many more. The New Yorker has called Jim “… the reigning master of the jazz guitar. This poetic player says more with fewer notes than any living improviser.”

This special appearance at Birdland celebrates his latest release, Hemispheres (above, on right), which pays homage to standards and new creations, some improvised on the spot. All the pieces are mystical, swinging, and cover all hemispheres of mind, brain, and world. Released in November of 2008 (ArtistShare), the album is very rich, offering intimate duo sessions between Hall and Bill Frisell as well as exploding tracks that feature the quartet.

In particular, they would like to draw your attention to three great artists: guitarists Steve Miller, Stanley Jordan, and Mike Stern. These featured artists will be playing alongside the ever popular Les Paul Trio, which includes Lou Pallo (guitar), John Colianni (piano), and Nicki Parrott (bass).

Monday, Nov. 9th

Steve Miller
Steve Miller is one of the most famous blues-rock guitarists to emerge from the 1960s. From his early days in San Francisco to his top-selling pop/rock hits of the ’70s and early ’80s “The Joker,” “Fly Like an Eagle,” “Rock’n Me,” and “Abracadabra.

Born in Milwaukee, Wi. in 1943 Steve was befriended by guitar pioneer Les Paul who was a frequent visitor to the Miller household and is considered Les’s ‘Godson’. A portion of the door proceeds for this show will benefit the Les Paul Foundation dedicated to keeping his legacy alive for future generations.

Stanley Jordan
From the moment he made his debut in 1985 with the gold-selling Grammy nominated album Magic Touch, guitar virtuoso Stanley Jordan has proven himself as a forward thinking innovator. With his nimbly executed “touch” or “tap” technique, he ushered a dazzling and spellbinding new sound into the world of progressive instrumental music. His latest album, State of Nature, was release in 2008 through Mack Avenue.

History

The Iridium Jazz Club has been thrilling International jazz fans since 1994 and is proud to announce an even better Iridium Jazz Club, now located at 1650 Broadway at 51st, in a historic jazz neighborhood. The New Iridium Jazz Club has been designed to be among the best live music experiences available anywhere!

Improvements to the club include a new state of the art Meyer Sound System conceived by no less an authority than the legendary guitarist Les Paul, Acoustics, Lighting, Design and a Recording Studio. What hasn’t changed is Iridium’s stellar roster of jazz artists, including Les Paul who plays every Monday, along with our Wine Spectator award winning wine list and upscale cuisine.

Iridium Jazz Club started with a mission in December 1994; present local artists in an attractive setting. New York’s jazz scene is littered with the remains of countless jazz clubs, who shot up quickly, only to close soon after. The Iridium took an unplanned evolutionary approach, utilizing local artists culled from homemade tapes. Soon, Iridium was “discovered” and was fortunate to begin operations in the midst of a jazz revival, the success of jazz at Lincoln Center, and an affluent West Side looking to experience a real NY Jazz Club.

The club has undergone several renovations to keep up with its increasing popularity. There have been many major releases recorded live at Iridium from such artists as Jacky Terrasson, Charlie Haden, Kenny Barron, Benny Carter, The Jazz Messengers, Sweets Edison, and Clark Terry.

Trio Elf To Play Three Shows In New York: Nov. 2nd, 4th, & 5th

Enja Records artists Trio Elf bring their creative re-invention of the traditional jazz trio format to New York for three performances in the beginning of November, 2009. The group schedule is:

- November 2nd at the Drummers’ Collective
- November 4th at the Douglass Street Music Collective
- November 5th at the Gershwin Hotel

And as an added bonus, drummer Gerwin Eisenhauer will hold a workshop at the Drummers’ Collective the night of the performance. The group is made of Gerwin Eisenhauer on drums, Walter Lang on piano and Sven Faller on bass.

Group Background

Trio Elf, from Bavaria in Germany, has achieved acclaim for incorporating new popular music styles such as techno, hiphop and drum&bass into the concept of the acoustic jazz piano trio. Drummer Gerwin Eisenhauer has studied with Dave Weckl, led workshops with Robby Ameen and has published a drum&bass workbook in 2005. Pianist Walter Lang brings a romantic and melodic sensitivity to the trio. Sven Faller has collaborated with Jim Beard, Chico Freeman, Charlie Mariano, John Patitucci and Bobby Watson and is a master at connecting bass line grooves with the romantic and the lyrical.

Trio Elf has compiled a repertoire that ranges from acoustic versions of music by such electronic icons such as Aphex Twin and Kraftwerk to digital versions of classics by Thelonious Monk, Milton Nascimento, Paolo Conte and Brahms. Their original compositions are inspired by sources as diverse as Bach, Jobim, the Beatles and “grunge.” Their two Enja recordings, We 3 Are 11 (2006) and 746 (2008), were hailed by critics in Europe and Japan and have been described as the “New Sound Of The Trio.”

Starting October 2nd and going through October 4th, 2009 guitarist Stanley Jordan and his trio will take center stage at the Iridium Jazz Club in New York. Sets are at 8:30 pm & 10:30 pm, and tickets are $35. His trio consists of bassist Charnett Moffett and drummer Kenwood Dennard.

Coming off his last release, State of Nature (Mack Avenue, 2008), he is bringing exciting new approaches and techniques to his playing. If you’re looking for a progressive musician that always likes to keep his work “in the now,” Stanley Jordan is worth checking out.

About The Artist

With his nimbly executed “touch” or “tap” technique, he ushered a dazzling and spellbinding new sound into the world of progressive instrumental music.

Subsequent albums found Jordan caught in a frustrating web of wanting to usher his audience into deeper levels of his artistry while record companies craved more of the stuff that had whisked him to the chart top. Because he debuted on the Blue Note label, he was marketed as a jazz progressive when what he was trying to stress was music beyond stylistic boundaries.

Now he is exploring deeper dimensions of his craft. After a self-imposed exile from the rat race in the 90s – one that included a retreat to the mountains of the southwest – Stanley Jordan has re-emerged with a new life’s direction.

“Most people – if and when they find their calling – come to see themselves in
some sort of service capacity,’ he states. ‘Right now I feel a strong desire to
bring my music to the people not just for entertainment, but also for inspiration
and healing.”

His New Approach

A primary element of this new direction involves championing Music Therapy, which he is studying in a Masters program at Arizona State University. With this approach, he wants to aim at reducing both physical and emotional stress that often accompany artists, one of which deals with ones own perception of themselves as an artist and the idea that they have to reach perfection. The positive affects of this training are not just skills Stanley teaches but skills he has adopted for his own creativity.

Another area of intensive interest for Jordan is the development of Sonification (turning something into sound) and the concept of using music as a form of representation.

“A great percentage of the data that people analyze is time sensitive data, and audio
is a far superior vehicle for understanding the passage of time. Take the amortization
schedule of a 30-year mortgage, for example. If I hit one note per second in the left
speaker for interest and another note per second for principle in the right speaker, it
would take about six minutes to ‘play’ that mortgage. A person could hear how long they
would be paying interest before they started paying principle. Looking at it on a graph is
one thing, but listening to it makes you feel it. Sonification offers deeper understanding
of information because more of the brain is involved in understanding that information.”

Jordan will continue to explore all of this and more via yet another new venture: The Sedona Books and Music Store that he took over in Arizona in the summer of 2005. Beyond selling books, CDs, musical instruments and supplies, it is a place Jordan intends to become a destination for transformation.

Originally from Cleveland, Jones’ musical roots are in the blues, and as a teenager, he performed with Jr. Wells and other blues legends. Mr. Jones holds a degree in visual art and has shown his paintings in Soho. In the early 1970’s, while studying at Kent State, he was determined to translate his abstract visual stylings into sound. To accomplish this, he studied composition, orchestration, conducting, and took private piano lessons with such 20th Century jazz masters as Walter Bishop Jr., Cecil Taylor and Sal Mosca in New York. He has also studied at Columbia, NYU, the Cleveland Music Settlement, and the Westchester Conservatory.

Mark Jones‘ music is a freshly innovative, uncompromising, virtuosic and poetic, with traces of influence found in such varied sources as Ornette Coleman, Cecil Taylor, McCoy Tyner, Bud Powell, Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Debussy, Prokofiev, Scriabin, Brahms, Bach, Bartok, the 12 tone serialists, 60’s folk and rock, and world musics, especially those of Spain, India, and Brazil, where he has spent winters for the past 20 years.

Mark Jones is one of the best kept secrets in the music world. A reclusive artist who rarely performs in public, or on recordings, Mr. Jones is one of the few contemporary musicians who possesses a completely original piano style and has authored a new book of truly memorable, engaging compositions that serve as new standards for improvisation. He has also composed various classical works, music for theater and taught in universities and privately.

Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola Hosts Mel Martin Band July 20th

The Mel Martin Band will pay a visit to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola on Monday, July 20th, 2009. The band consists of Mel Martin (saxophones and flute), Ratzo B. Harris (bass), and Jeff Marrs (drums). The performance will also feature jazz pianist Don Friedman.

Celebrating the release of their new jazzed media CD Where the Warm Winds Blow, they are excited to share their new stuff with New York. The album, released May 12th of this year through Jazzed Media Label, marks Mel Martin’s first new studio recording since 2001. It features a cohesive ensemble and encompasses a wide panoply of styles including Latin jazz originals, contemporary classical, and jazz standards from Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, and Victor Young.

Where the Warm Winds Blow

Artist Background:

Mel Martin is a composer, arranger, bandleader, saxophonist and flute player – one of the most versatile and creative musicians to ever emerge from the San Francisco Bay Area. In his long career, he’s played a part in many of the innovative movements that have come out of that creative community.

He sat in with Wes Montgomery and his brothers while he was still a teenager, played in John Handy’s Freedom Band in 1962 upon moving to San Francisco, worked and recorded with many of the progressive rock and Latin rock bands of the late 60s and early 70s including The Loading Zone, Cold Blood, Santana, Azteca and Boz Scaggs.

He founded the award winning Listen, one of the early West Coast jazz-fusion bands in 1976. He’s currently artistic director of Bebop and Beyond, a group he founded in 1983, as well as leading the Mel Martin Band, The Tenor Conclave, the Mel Martin Big Band and the Benny Carter All Star Tribute Band.

Cornelia Street Cafe In New York

Having first opened on July 4th, 1977, the Cornelia Street Cafe in New York City was from the beginning, and still is, an artists’ cafe. From poetry readings to story telling to live jazz, this place has it all. This venue has bar area adorned with a beautiful oak bar, three dining rooms – one with a working fireplace – and in the summer establishes itself as one of Greenwich Village’s loveliest sidewalk cafes.

Over the years the Cornelia Street Cafe has presented an enormous variety of artists, from singer-songwriter Suzanne Vega to poet-senator Eugene McCarthy, from members of Monty Python to members of the Royal Shakespeare Company. It has offered a performance home to the Songwriters Exchange, the Writers Room, the Writers Studio, the Greek-American Writers Association, the Italian-American Writers Association, the New Works Project/Theatre, and many others.

In addition, Cornelia Street Cafe has become just as much a culinary as well as cultural landmark in the Village, gaining all kinds of acclaim as it won the 1998 Village Arts Award for “inspired cuisine.” Downstairs from the kitchen is their performance room, which host live jazz and poetry reading.
